The PR card serves as formal documentation of your status as a Canadian permanent residence. To travel back to Canada by boat, bus, rail, or aeroplane, Permanent Residents must have a current permanent resident card (PR card) or permanent resident travel document (PRTD). You might not be able to enter Canada without one. When you present it at the port of entry (POE), your PR card must be valid. You will need to apply for a new card if your current one expires. If your PR card has expired, you will still have permanent resident status and do not lose it. But to enter Canada (if you are outside the country), you must apply for a PRTD.
Once you have met the residency and eligibility requirements you can apply for Canadian citizenship. Dual citizenship is permitted in Canada so if your native country recognises dual citizenship, it follows that you do not have to renounce it in order to obtain Canadian citizenship. As per current regulations, under residency requirements, you are eligible to apply for citizenship if you have resided in Canada for at least three of the previous five years. The main process involves submitted documents, a citizenship examination, and ultimately taking the Oath of Citizenship (or attending the Citizenship ceremony).
